Installation of Vinyl Flooring
Posted by adminInstalling vinyl flooring yourself can seem like an overwhelming task to many people. However, by following just a few simple steps you can achieve professional results at a huge savings.
Once you have chosen the vinyl flooring that you want to install, the best place to begin your installation is by creating a diagram of the room. The diagram should accurately portray the room’s dimensions. Review the diagram along with the dimensions with the salesperson at the retail store where you are purchasing the flooring. This will help ensure you are purchasing an accurate amount of flooring.
The next step will involve making sure the subfloor is in good condition. To achieve good results, the floor needs to be completely smooth and clean. It may be necessary to use a patching compound to fill any holes or smooth any rough areas. The compound can be applied with a putty knife and will need to dry for about an hour before moving onto the next step. During this step, you will also need to remove the trim molding from around the base of the walls.
It is time to cut the vinyl flooring to fit the area. You will want to lay the piece of vinyl flat and measure out the dimensions. Clearly mark the areas that need to be cut and, using a utility knife, cut the vinyl about three inches larger than the dimensions of the floor.
Place the vinyl in the room, allowing the excess to curl up against the walls. In order to trim the excess, place a two by four against the bottom of the wall creasing the vinyl. Then, using a utility knife and straightedge, cut the vinyl flooring. Cut corners by first cutting a vertical line from the base of the corner to the edge of the vinyl. Then, cut along the creased marks made using the two by four.
Once the flooring is cut to size, roll back about half the flooring. Apply an adhesive to the subfloor using a notched trowel, letting it sit according manufacturer instructions. Lay the floor back in place and press firmly to achieve a smooth finish. Repeat these steps for the other half of the flooring.
After re-attaching the trim molding along the floor, you will have a beautiful new vinyl floor that you can enjoy for years. It is recommended that walking on the new floor is kept to a minimum for at least 24 hours after installation.
